Two key theories developed n the 1970"s. Intimacy is all about managing tension between sharing and withholding. Any tension between openness and closeness whats interesting is how we negotiate. When you start dating someone, friendship is put off to the side. Because you are close to them, you can afford to be a little distance from them. Date someone for so long lose yourself. Self-disclosure. (layers of onion = private information) Information control & ownership of private information. Communication rules we established to try to control/manage the private ownership of my information information we share. Everytime you share your boundary extends to: collective boundary. Loraine might go home that night and talk to her husband. Because made loraine get it. (lose control of that info) We know this because someone shares it, we are bothered by it. Even if we give away part ownership, we still perceive that it"s ours.
