Coordinated management of meaning (pearce and cronen) In sociology: focus is on societal joint action (marriage, war, trade, church worship, etc) Focus on the words we use, how we use words symbolically with meaning as we interact with people. In communication: focus is more individual (conversations, etc. ) interaction-based theory. Your thought comes from interacting with people. We act toward others based on the meanings those others hold for us. E. g. , mother, meaning: she is caring so if she cares for you then you will talk to her about things that are bothering you. E. g, you are walking down the street, and someone who is dressed a little weird or of a different skin tone so you walk towards the other way. E. g. , you believe that you are going to fail your exam so you don"t study and then you actually do fail because you fulfilled the prophecy yourself, you took the action. Use symbols/ language to create joint reality .
