PHIL 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: False Consciousness, Free Market, Paternalism
Document Summary
Deontology: focus on duty independent of consequence, consequences do not matter. Universal law: act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law. Humanity: act so that you use humanity, as much in your own person as in the person of every other, always at the same time as end and never merely as means. Is it enough: unclear standard for informal consent, often people cannot understand what they are consenting to, misunderstand, false consciousness, too young, uneducated, possibility of dissent. There is no possibility for meaningful dissent: both deception and coercion treat other as merely a means, two aspects of respect, never merely as a means, we should act on intentions to which the other cannot consent. Respect and sex: sex without intimacy, hookups, prostitution, sec normally suggests intimacy and affection, kissing, embracing, intimate physical contact normally suggest affection, sometimes deep affection, disrespect in non-intimate sex, deception.
