ENG 362 Lecture 7: Peter Brook Marat_Sade
Document Summary
The royal shakespeare video of the peter brook production of marat/sade seemed to be a straightforward adaptation of the text. I think the fact that it is a play within a play is what makes it such a special production because the actors are portraying such complex and multi- layered characters. A lot of the disturbing aspects of this production come from the cinematic approach. I found myself feeling a bit uncomfortable during the close ups on peoples faces with their eyes just staring straight into your soul. Especially the faces with the clown-like makeup along with the unsettling music. The different camera angles such as showing the actors behind the bars of the institution and a view of the audience gives the play a realistic element that made it even more disturbing to watch. I honestly felt like an uninvited onlooker trying not to get caught. I did appreciate the cinematics from an artistic standpoint though.
