Marat/sade by peter weiss is the first play i have read that is a play within a play. As someone not previously familiar with this piece of work though, i came to know that the basic summary is a play about marat"s assasination written by sade and performed by the inmates of charenton. There is a lot going on as far as time periods in this production because it is about the assasination in 1793, sade"s play is presented in 1808 and the audience is in the present. Marat/sade is a complex production with a lot of dramatic elements. The complexity of a play-within-a-play is difficult enough but it also has unpunctuated language with dialogue ranging from doggerel style to free verse, song, dance, etc. Scenes vary in genre from tragic, comical, to melodramatic.
