Children with good language abilities enjoy reading activities and will pretend to read at an early age. Knowledge of syllables, sounds and sound structures of words. Words can be broken into smaller pieces. Early pa skills predict reading and spelling abilities. Understand relationship between written letters and corresponding speech. Predictors of success: strong predictors of second grade reading abilities. Segmenting into component sounds and blending together. Shift from learning to read to reading to learn (grade 3) Understanding that words are made up of morphemes. Requires persistent difficulties in reading, writing, arithmetic or mathematical reasoning skills. Symptoms: inaccurate or slow and effortful reading. Poor written expression that lacks clarity, difficulties remembering number facts, inaccurate mathematical reasoning. Individual"s difficulties must not be better explained by developmental, neurological, sensory or motor disorders. Printed word recognition despite adequate instruction and general cognitive ability. Ability to think about how you use language. Direct teaching of literacy and preliteracy skills.
