Development process of promoting/enabling people"s ability to make choices based on preferences sustainably. Expanding choices, equal distribution, reaching the full potential. Lower child mortality rate, education, health care, economic and political stability. Tie between the economic sustainability and environmental sustainability. Development and modernity (value judgments traditionally tied to the west) Culture mass consumption, newness not traditional (rejecting the old ways, shedding a skin ) + increased access to resources, empowerment, appreciation of differences. Modernity triggers dev, bring people together, view modernity as dev goal. Push back as eurocentric imposition and feelings of dislocation and alienation, distribution inequality, environmental issues. Even in a modernized country, not everyone has equal voice -> even mass media is controlled by a certain population. Global north global south (bric are both recipients and donors of aid: trying to mask economic differences by seemingly neutral geographical terms, but not all wealthy countries are in the north.
