Ports of japan nally opened by american commodore perry: arrives in japan, requesting that japan open up a few ports to trade. Tokugawa shogunate obviously pissed o that they were forced into this. On top of opening the ports, the japanese were forced to accept extraterritoriality (i. e. crimes committed in japan by westerners will be tried in western courts, not japanese courts) Debate within japan on how to deal with opening up .
