Document Summary

Indigenous reactions: we"ve already discussed violent reactions with the taiping and sepoy rebellions, now we look at states that attempted to emulate the west, three countries. However, tokugawa shogunate closes itself o from the world. Only a few ports in japan were europeans/christians allowed to trade. Japanese look over to china and see what the europeans are doing to them not very comforting. Realize that they really can"t keep the outside world out for much longer. Ports of japan nally opened by american commodore perry: arrives in japan, requesting that japan open up a few ports to trade. Tokugawa shogunate obviously pissed o that they were forced into this. On top of opening the ports, the japanese were forced to accept extraterritoriality (i. e. crimes committed in japan by westerners will be tried in western courts, not japanese courts) Debate within japan on how to deal with opening up . Did you see those ships perry brought with him?!
