In media, especially in the realm of film & television, the trope of the dead girl is utilized to further the plot & give more depth not to the central figure, but to the male characters surrounding the conflict. Twin peaks is a beloved show that capitalizes almost entirely on the death of laura. Similar to palmer, the girls portrayed are often traditionally pretty & white. The girl herself is not a character within the show, rather the memory of her is an overshadow of each plot point. This leads to real life cases, or maybe stems from (jon-benet & the hysteria surrounding her murder) as dead girl shows often gain a cult following & become extremely popular (pll, true detective, veronica mars) Some of these shows are almost elitist in their followings, as they try to lean towards intellectualism.
