HIST 1011 Lecture 3: Other Worlds Prior to 1500
Document Summary
Nearly every corner of the earth was inhabited by human beings before 1500. They organized large societies, developed their own skills and technologies, created worlds of their own that were formidable in the own world. That tells us that all societies are shaped in substance by their environment and shape those environments. The best way to measure their power and sophistication is in their ability to harvest: the americas. A world inhabited by a wide array of peoples, organized in small nomadic bands hunting animals and moving from places to place. They developed very largely agricultural societies by getting a sense of population density. There are various parts of the americas equaled those of parts of eurasia. What made this rich diversity in americas was the extraordinary array of food crops developed on a large scale which speaks to their agricultural skills. Four major food staples that sustain population across the globe: corn, potato, rice, wheat.
