Proxemics- the study of how we use and communicate with space. It is claimed, staked out in some way, and defended against encroachment. Primary territory- territory considered to be the exclusive domain of its owner (dorm. Secondary territory- generally associated with a particular person or group frequently seen in and around it; not central to the daily functioning of the owner, not under the owner"s exclusive control (booth at restaurant) Public territory- open to anyone and is eldom under the constant control of any one person or group; it is subject to temporary ownership and is often protected with as much vigor as personal property (parking space) Home territory- when a group of people colonizes a public territory by taking it over and using it continuously, it becomes home territory (gangs operating on particular streets) Interactional territory- can develop wherever people congregate for social exchange (two people having a conversation in a hallway and people go around)
