PSYC 362 Lecture 13: PSYC 362 - Chapter 13
Document Summary
Women are more likely than men to suffer from depression. Men are more likely than women to commit suicide (more women attempt suicide but more men succeed) Gender differences in depression are not usually found in college student populations. Different types of factors that cause gender differences. Susceptibility factors: innate, biological factors that place women at greater risk for depression than men. Precipitating factors: environmental events that trigger depression. The gender differences in depression don"t appear until adolescence. Single cause theory: one cause but activated for females during adolescence. Different cause theory: different causes but activated for females during adolescence. Interactive theory: females have more of the causes than males and the cause is activated during depression. Women have less perceived control over their environment than men. Women and men cope differently with stress. Women are more vulnerable to different classes of stressors. No consistent genetic explanation for the gender differences in depression.
