Precipitating factors: environmental events that trigger depression. The gender differences in depression don"t appear until adolescence. Single cause theory: one cause but activated for females during adolescence. Different cause theory: different causes but activated for females during adolescence. Interactive theory: females have more of the causes than males and the cause is activated during depression. Women have less perceived control over their environment than men. Women and men cope differently with stress. Women are more vulnerable to different classes of stressors. No consistent genetic explanation for the gender differences in depression.
