PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Habituation, Dishabituation, Veganism
Document Summary
Acquisition: developing and strengthening a cr through repeated pairings of the ns and us. In a typical acquisition curve, conditioning increases rapidly during the first few trials and then gradually levels off after subsequent trials factors affecting the speed of conditioning and the maximum amount of conditioning (asymptote) Intensity of us: more intense us results in faster/stronger conditioning (e. g. , louder noise, stronger shock) Intensity of ns: more intense ns results in faster/stronger conditioning (e. g. , brighter light, louder tone) extinction: weakening or elimination of cr by presenting cs without us. Cr that is no longer elicited by cs has been extinguished. Cs that as been extinguished does not return to being ns; pairing it with us again leads to more rapid learning (conditioning) spontaneous recovery: reappearance of cr after extinction. Especially important when trying to extinguish a fear. Provides evidence that crs are not unlearned during extinction; instead, inhibition of cr is learned.
