Owners did not want to give slaves christianity because they would have to be more moral to them. Slowly christianity becomes a part of the culture. It is illegal to teach slaves to read and write. Harriet jacobs- hid in the cellar of her master"s house for 7 years. Becomes a prominent abolitionist speaker in the north. Sees it as a sign for rebellion. They kill the family while they were sleeping. Some people did not want to remember the abuse of slavery.
