BIOL 2335 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Niche Differentiation, Species Pool, Biogeography
Document Summary
Different scales at which biodiversity is determines. General processes that determine diversity at each scale and how processes at larger scales influence patterns at smaller scales. Form of major latitudinal pattern in diversity. Which of following processes influence local species diversity: evolution and historical factors, habitat diversity, these two-affect regional and larger scale populations which affect local species, dispersal, extent of resource partitioning. Which is the most accurate representation of pattern of biodiversity and latitude: a increasing latitude will decrease diversity since environments are harsher. We know that 1) tropics generally did not suffer extinctions as result of glaciation like higher latitudes and 2) tropics have more constant climate, and greater level of productivity than higher latitudes. Species interactions: since there are many different plants, competition is not as necessary, since there were no major extinctions in this area, species were able to stay alive and speciate more and more over time.
