PSYCH 115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Unconditional Positive Regard, Psych, Little Albert Experiment
Document Summary
Idea that people inherently want the best for themselves. Idea that people strive for self-actualization in order to reach one"s highest achievable potential. Theory that he could achieve success with patients as long as he was focused on three concepts. Genuineness: being his true self and not being a therapist, treating clients as friends. Empathy: he would really try to put himself in his client"s shoes in order to relate on an emotional and psychological level in order to attempt to truly understand. Humans fulfill their basic needs first (food and shelter) before moving onto higher needs like self esteem. Higher levels of achievement or self-actualization cannot be met without fulfilling basic needs first. Therapist conveys empathy and unconditional positive regard. No strong evidence that purely humanistic therapies work to treat mental disorders. More effective for people dealing with normal life stress, not suffering from psychopathology. Derived from a scientific approach to the study of psychopathology.
