PSYCH 115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Personality Disorder, Mental Disorder, Narcissism
Document Summary
3 different clusters made up of different personality disorders. An inflexible pattern of inner experience and behaviour that is distinct from cultural expectations and influences at least two of the following: cognition about the self and others, affect, interpersonal functioning, impulse control. The pattern: causes significant distress or impairment, is inflexible, is pervasive across situations. Onset by early adulthood and persistence for a long duration. Not explained by another mental disorder, by a substance, or by a medical condition. Symptoms of disorders in this cluster bear some similarity to the types of bizarre thinking and experiences seen in schizophrenia. Bizarre thinking and functional impairments are less severe than they are in schizophrenia (no hallucinations) and no full-blown delusions. Disorders: paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder. People with paranoid personality disorder are suspicious of others, expect to be mistreated or exploited, and thus are secretive and continually on the lookout for signs of trickery and abuse.
