GEOG 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Weather Lore, Weather Forecasting
Document Summary
Factors influencing wind flow (speed and direction: pressure gradient. Rotation of the earth deflects winds to the right in the n. hemisphere and to the left in the s. hemisphere: rotation of the earth, frictional force. If the surface of the earth is rugged or has obstacles such as hills, mountains, valleys or vegetation the wind is blocked causing speed reduction and its direction of flow is also changed. Prediction of the state of the atmosphere in a particular region over a period of 24 to 48 hours. To predict weather, elements of weather such as wind direction, atmospheric pressure, temperature and cloud cover are observed. It was based on astrological, local, traditional and religious theories. Showed careful observations expressed in form of poems and jingles that were passed from generation to generation: weather lore. Advanced equipment like electronic computers, satellites, rockets, radars, aircrafts, balloons, ships and submarines have been developed and are in use.
