Personality individuals unique set of behavioral traits. Personality traits durable disposition to behave in a particular way across situations. Basic unit of personality that influences thought feeling and behavior. Nomothetic approach studying personality by comparing different individuals. Idiographic approach studying personal dispositions of an individual. Gordon allport: emphasized uniqueness and complexity of the whole person. Unique traits when combined together form the personality. Cardinal traits: traits that are of the most pervasive, and influential to an individual"s personality (the need for fame, money, justice) Central traits: features that represent the most overt expressions of an individual"s personality (shyness, honesty, self-consciousness) Secondary traits: aspects of an individual"s personality that show their influence in very specific situations (shy person becoming outspoken at a protest) Theoretical: desire to discover truth and integrate one"s knowledge. Economic: concern for what is useful and practical. Aesthetic: appreciation of artistic beauty, harmony and form for its own sake. Political: interest in various aspects related to power.
