Principal expression of personality was the lifelong task of strengthening the ego and establishing personal identity. Strengths: comprehensive viewpoint, explored periods of development, expanded role of ego and looked at how older people develop. Limitations: too similar to freud"s viewpoint, uses societal means to measure identity (rather than using objective means) Ego is a unifying force of an individual"s experiences. Development involves the resolution of a series of crises that help the person to learn to function more effectively. Development occurs through the lifespan by resolving conflicts that help the individual to acquire knowledge and skill to cope. Ego development occurs through a series of sequential stages with each stage building on the previous. Resolution of a conflict involving balancing the needs of the individual with the expectations of society. Dealing with sense of uncertainty with regard to one"s needs being met. Trust created through consistent parental care (hope) Mistrust created through inconsistent parental care (fear)
