John tyler was a virginian who was known for being gracious and kind. However, he was also known for being extremely stubbornly attached to principle. John tyler was often accused of being a democrat in whig clothing. Tyler rejected the entire whig program of a national bank, high protective tariffs, and federally funded internal improvements, such as roads and canals. Clay stubbornly determined to push the program through anyway, despite t(cid:455)le(cid:396)"s disapproval.
