Document Summary

Collected info from countries on whether or not democracy is breaking down. Ideniied a breakdown in more parliamentary systems than presidenial. Richard neustadts model of presidenial power in the united states is the power to persuade . Us presidents are expected and claim to accomplish much more than they actually can. Negoiaing with other branches of government can be a real pain too: agency head, bureaucrats, cabinet secretaries, congress, supreme court. Resources of oice (power to nominate secretaries, nominate judges, hire and ire lower level bureaucrats) (these don"t vary for any presidents) Insider status/professional reputaion- johnson bc he was in congress for years, hilary. Charisma and public esteem- obama, bush: its very personality centric: each president is as inluenial has he or she is, theres not much inherent to the posiion that makes it very powerful. Consituional powers: consituional powers inherent to the oice of the presidency that allow presidents to have their preferences taken into consideraion.
