GEO-1400 Lecture 12: Food & Agriculture (April 2-8) Part 2
Document Summary
Fishing is the capture of wild fish and other seafood living in the waters. Aquaculture is the cultivation of seafood under controlled conditions. The (cid:449)orld"s o(cid:272)ea(cid:374)s are di(cid:448)ided i(cid:374)to 18 (cid:373)ajor fishi(cid:374)g regio(cid:374)s. China is responsible for one-third of the (cid:449)orld"s (cid:455)ield of fish. Human consumption of fish and seafood increased from 27 million metric tons in 1960 to 132 million metric tons in 2012. Developing countries are responsible for five-sixths of the increase. Fish consumption has increased more rapidly than population growth. Overfishing has been particularly acute in the north atlantic and pacific oceans. The un estimates that one-quarter of fish stocks have been overfished and one-half fully exploited, leaving only one-fourth under fished. Dairy farms must be close to their markets because milk is highly perishable, and dairy farming is the most important agriculture practiced near large cities in developed countries. The milk shed is the ring near cities from which milk can be supplied without spoiling.
