BSC 1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Plate Tectonics, Rodinia, Archean
Document Summary
The main first branches of animals were defined in this period. They began to secrete oxygen into the atmosphere. Organisms moved to land to obtain more oxygen. Lots of methane (ch4) and ammonia (nh3) and hydrogen atoms. Phosphorus released from rocks and washed into oceans which promoted algal blooms. More co2 removed from atmosphere because of algae. Extensive root system weathers rocks which release phosphorus and allows more algae to form in oceans. Decrease in co2 in atmosphere and temps cool again. Life evolved into 3 monophyletic domains/clades: eubacteria, archaea, eukaryotes (6 supergroups within this one) 3 domain of life: bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes. Method in which mitochondria and chloroplasts entered early eukaryotic cells. Acquired chloroplasts twice: eukaryotic cell w/mitochondria engulfs cyanobacteria. Results in red and green algae: eukaryotic cell engulfs red algae which results in brown algae. Instituted the use of 2 part names. (genus - species) Order of taxon - synapomorphies are used to differentiate the organisms.
