Method in which mitochondria and chloroplasts entered early eukaryotic cells. Acquired chloroplasts twice: eukaryotic cell w/mitochondria engulfs cyanobacteria. Results in red and green algae: eukaryotic cell engulfs red algae which results in brown algae. Instituted the use of 2 part names. (genus - species) Order of taxon - synapomorphies are used to differentiate the organisms.
