Document Summary

Taxonomy is a hierarchical classification system for describing and sequencing learning activities. It is a way of categorizing selected objects - in this case, activities of learning, from lower levels to higher levels. Taxonomy literally means the department of knowledge that embodies the laws and principles of classification. The word is derived from the greek taxis, meaning arrangement, and nomos, meaning law. In the taxonomies involving learning activities, the higher levels of the taxonomy involve more complex behaviors than the lower levels. If a student can perform at the third level of the taxonomy, then we assume they can perform at the first and second levels as well. Some different ways they help in the planning process follow: provide a range of objectives - a taxonomy provides a list of possible ranges of objectives available in any subject. For example, if you expect students to memorize facts, then the student evaluation should reflect responses indicating correct memorization.
