SAG 105L Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Correlation Does Not Imply Causation

Document Summary

To avoid it, think in sequences, not individual shots. An animation with bad continuity is frustrating to watch: this is because the flow is constantly being interrupted. This can easily be avoided by planning ahead and having a detailed storyboard. Without it, an animation would be a jumble of random shots: even though they might have interesting movements and action, they are not a series of flowing images. Continuity invites the audience to be actively engaged in the story without frustrating distractions. If the audience has to try to figure out what is supposed to be going on, you have lost them. Continuity can be controlled by being aware of these 6 key areas where errors are known to occur: space, time, direction, costume, hookups, sound. It can be disorienting for the audience to watch your characters move from part of the set to another from shot to shot. Try to keep them in logical positions.
