SAG 105L Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Norman Mclaren, Optical Illusion
Document Summary
Sag 105l4 lecture 21 technique and practice. Animation is an illusion: the secret to it is cheating. Norman mclaren, an amazing animator, once said that animation isn"t about the frames, it"s about what happens between the frames. It is a fast succession of sequential images, all just a smidge different from the next. This works because the human brain will automatically fill in the gaps the animation leaves. Animation is all about arcs: whether in movement or in a graph editor. Air resistance can cause objects to bend. Apply this reaction when animating solid objects: or even things that don"t really bend, like arms. Arcs and line-bending techniques can be used effectively on human limbs. Adding even a slight bend to a moving object to help aid in the flow of the animation. Distortion and exaggeration are powerful animation tools. Great animators know that not all frames have to look perfect.
