The process during which the accused person appears before a court to enter a plea of guilty or not
guilty.
Criminal Case
A case in which a defendant is tried for committing a crime as defined by law.
Due Process
The right of every citizen to be protected against arbitrary action by the government.
Felony
A crime usually punishable by more than one year in jail and/or a significant fine.
Grand Jury
The group that hears charges against a suspect and decides whether there is sufficient evidence to bring
the person to trial.
indictment
A written, formal statement issued by a grand jury that charges the accused with one or more crimes.
Miranda rule/warning announced in Miranda v. Arizona
States that confessions are inadmissible in a criminal prosecution. Anything you say can and will be used
against you in a court of law
Misdemeanor
A minor crime usually punishable by less than one year in jail or a small fine
Plea Bargaining
The process in which a defendant pleads guilty to a lesser crime than the one with which the defendant
was originally charged.
