CHL 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Darth Vader, Tough Love, Princess Leia
ARCHETYPAL
Archetype: a universal mental pattern. This means that, in the same way a doctor can cure our
bodies if we have the same disease, our minds can be treated in similar ways.
Carl Jung - early follower of Freud. Believes that dreams do have meaning. He does have a few
differences in his views:
1. The mind works the same way the body does - the brain is an organ. We nourish our body;
we also need to feed and exercise our brain. Thoughts are food for the brain. We are all
unique, but we are also universal. We are all affected in similar ways by things, but in
unique ways.
2. The ego is the public I; the me I present to the public. A persona. This is healthy.
3. A new character he introduces is the shadow. The rebel me. This is who I really am behind
the mask/ego. If this part of you cannot be accepted, you are weak. It is an empowering
aspect, but it must be controlled. It can be considered a powerful id.
a. Example: the part of you that has to say no to your child. Tough love.
b. Darth Vader is the shadow of Anakin Skywalker.
4. He also gives us the anima (female)/animus (male). All of us have both in our psyche. These
two have to work together for us to be operating at our best capability.
a. A Hansel and Gretel/Luke and Leia kind of relationship.
5. Extrovert and introvert come from Carl Jung. An extrovert gets their validation from
judgment from others. An introvert judges himself.
MYTHOLOGICAL
Mythology is the sacred stories/writings of cultures. Comparative mythologists study sacred
writings from different cultures.
1. If Jung is right, there should be universal patterns.
a. Example: there should be a creation story in all the writings.
b. A storyteller feeds the archetypal pattern.
i. Joseph Campbell tries to prove this. And he does.
1. There is one pattern that spans across %: the hero’s journey. This
is so because it represents our life’s journey.
THE HERO’S JOURNEY
Hero: self-sacrifice. I give up myself for something other than myself.
Hero’s life - there are three major stages, as stated by Campbell:
1. Birth - indicated by:
a. special bloodlines
i. indicate a person’s potential.
ii. In mythology, one parent would be a god/goddess.
