Heritability: relationship between genotype and phenotype: genes and what we see, proportion of phenotypic variance/observed across individuals that"s explained by. A heritability of . 20 means that only . 20 of phenotypic variance can be applied to genotypic variance. The environmental component is the part that is not attributable to genetic variance: heritability, can"t be applied to a single individual, refers to a sample or population. It is an estimate, it is not constant across time or population. If yes evidence of heritability: why, equal environments assumption (eea, environments for mz and dz twins are equally similar , adoption studies: does child resemble adoptive or bio parents more, twins reared apart= best of both worlds! One kid goes to summer camp, the other doesn"t. one kid occupies the back room in the house, the other doesn"t. different groups of friends. Interestingly, it is the non-shared experiences of individual children that are most influential for traits like extraversion and neuroticism.
