PSYC 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Esterase, Neuroglia, Reuptake
4/4/2018
• What is a neurotransmitter?
o Synaptic cleft
o Rely on electricity from neuron and chemically from chemical neurotransmitters
o Depolarization in receiving dendrite
• Excitation or Inhibition?
o Different neurotransmitters say yes or no
o Most of the time says yes
o ACH -> depolarization from increase in red graph
o ACH -> drops resting potential down from decrease in blue graph
▪ Same neurotransmitters can sometimes do yes or no
• What is neurotransmission?
• Neurotransmitter lifecycle
o Created in synapse and packaged in packets (full of neurotransmitters)
o Electrical charge will push packages to the end of the terminal buttons
o Fuses and gets released into the synapse
o Receptors on the other side are listening to that specific neurotransmitter
o Cause for action potential or depress
o Clear out the signal to reset neurons
• What about cocaine?
o Different drugs do different things
o Effects reuptake of dopamine so dopamine hangs out longer in the synaptic cleft
so it fires for longer
• Clearing neurotransmitters
o Sucking it back up into the presynaptic side to recycle back into vesicle (recycle)
▪ Not fast enough
▪ Cocaine blocks reuptake receptor
o Enzymes floating around to break down the neurotransmitters
o Entropy, some will float out of the cleft
▪ Astrocytes (glial cells) clean up
• Reuptake inhibitors
• Dopamine: A renaissance Neurotransmitter
o Does many different things
o How does one neurotransmitter do so many things?
• Cocaine
o David bowie on cocaine
▪ Hyperactive
▪ Lots of excess motor activity
▪ Sniffing
▪ Speaking was fast
• Cocaine Distribution and Pharmacokinetics
o Cocaine binge right after starts to decrease
• Bacterial Cocaine Esterase (CocE)
