Animal spirits were produced in the heart, flowed into the ventricles, and were stored for movement and sensation. Believed ventricles were the instrument of the soul, but the brain tissue itself carried animals spirits that controlled behavior. The ventricles were actually filled with cerebral spinal fluid: rene descartes (1596-1650) Reflexes sensory stimulation valves in ventricles to release animal spirits into hollow nerves caused movement. Voluntary behavior required interaction with the soul, via the pineal gland. Function is correlated with size of cortical area. Well-developed cortical areas pushed on skull and produced palpable bumps: this is dumb and has been disproved. Therefore correlations didn"t make any sense because data was collected correctly. Right theory with different parts of the brain being specialized, but completely wrong methods: mid 1800s: look at relationships between brain damage and cognition.
