PSY 442 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders, Anticonvulsant
Document Summary
Here are some relevant ideas about the neuropsychological profile of some of the most common neuropsychiatric disorders. Epilepsy is one of the most complex neuropsychiatric disorders, the incidence of life is estimated between 2-5%. It is a group of conditions, the most common manifestation of which is epileptic crisis, produced by transient, abnormal electrical discharges of neuronal groups. However, the cognitive prognosis becomes bleak in cases where the following conditions are present: early onset, frequent and severe seizures, atonic and tonic seizures, seizures of various kinds, and seizure status. Neuropsychology factors associated with cognitive problems include the toxicity of some antiepileptic drugs and the poor response to the drugs, which generally results in the need for polytherapy. On the other hand, there is a group of patients who present abnormal electroencephalographic activity, but without notable clinical manifestations. This condition can also produce educational deficits, generally associated with attentional fluctuations due to subclinical transient discharges.
