People can be understood from the perspective of their phenomenal field (rogers) Basic need to maintain & enhance life. Goal of existence: satisfy the need for actualization optimistic humanism: maslow"s hierarchy of needs. Basic assumption: the ultimate need or notice is to self-actualize. Hierarchy of needs: how human motivation is characterized. Not about the exact ordering of specific needs. Self-actualization reqs fulfillment of other needs optimistic humanism: hierarchy of needs. Understand happiness in different cultures thru lens of maslow"s hierarchy. Perceives the world accurately and w/o neurotic distortion, and takes responsibility for his or her choices, and is happy. Face the world w/o fear, self-doubt, or neurotic defense. Based on distinction betw two ways of seeking happiness. Autonomy: find your own way, make own decisions. Relatedness: establish & maintain ties w/ others. Evidence in favor of instinct goal pursuit.
