Document Summary

Aortic area: 2nd ics, closure of aorta is loudest. Pulmonic area: 2nd ics, closure of pulmonic valve is loudest. Tricuspid area: 5th ics, left of sternal border (closure of tricuspid valve is loudest) Mitral/bicuspid area: 5th ics, left of sternum (closure of mitral valve is loudest: cardiac cycle: Diastole: filling and relaxed > right atrium fills with blood from superior and inferior vena cava, left atrium fills with blood from pulmonary veins > blood flows into relaxed ventricles from filling av valves. Systole: contraction and pumping > atria relax, ventricles begin to contract > av valves close, semilunar valves open, blood is forced into the aorta and pulmonary artery: heart sounds: lub-dub from closure of valves. Lub = s1 = closing of av valves (mitral/bicuspid and tricuspid) at end of diastole/beginning of systole. Dub = s2 = closing of semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonic) at diastole.
