Document Summary

Qualitative analysis is the process by which species in mixtures are separated and identified. Quantitative analysis determines in which amount it is present in the sample. In week one, we tried to identify the cations in the known solution which included ag + , pb 2+ , hg 2 . These cations were identified by adding certain chemicals to the solutions to see how the ions would react. Each cation would react differently which helped us identify each individual cation. We used centrifugation and decantation to separate solids and solutions. With the knowledge and experience we gained in week 1, we tried to identify the cations in the unknown solution in week 2. Test tubes/test tube rack: to hold the solutions and precipitates. 10ml graduated cylinder: to measure 4ml of the known and unknown solutions. Beaker: used to hold boiling water that"ll be needed for hot water bath. Hot plate: use to heat up the water.
