Crassus, pompey and caesar were the three members of the first triumvirate. The senate forms the first triumvirate to hold caesar in check. Crassus, the rich, wanted consulship and power for himself. Pompey, the military leader, wanted land for his veterans (like sulla) Pompey is the most important understudied figure in roman history. Pompey is responsible for building the late republic and also is responsible for its fall. Pompey puts down 3 major revolts and was one of the great generals in roman history (spain, mithridates, and pirates). Despite pompey receiving the credit for putting down the spartacus slave revolts, no animosity stirred between pompey and crassus and they decided to rule the senate together. Crassus was the ri(cid:272)hest (cid:373)a(cid:374) i(cid:374) ro(cid:373)e (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause he (cid:271)ought up real estate duri(cid:374)g ulla"s reig(cid:374). He therefore had no reason to fight pompey because he already had an excellent reputation.
