Japanese, overt racism became socially acceptable. Also contributed to Japanese internment
camps (more later)

Behind the Rising Sun- Racist movie, presents Japanese men as lustful, vengeful rapists.
Japanese were seen as racially inferior and evil, but Italians and Germans were seen as
following the wrong leader.
1. From depression to war
Massive government spending for the war ended the depression, vast expansion of war-related
industries, 1942-actually a labor shortage, US economy leapt ahead, GDP doubled, wages went
up 40% during the war years, there were shortages and rationing, but it wasn’t making major
sacrifices. Standard of living went up during the war- opposite of Europe. Meat, sugar, and
coffee were rationed.
War Production Board (WPB)- Kinda like War Industries Board of WWI.
The Government got bigger, government became more involved in everyone’s daily lives.
Information, goods, taxes, work, wages, and hours were all subject to regulation by federal
government. Government granted money to universities for research.
Manhattan Project- 150,000 people involved, $2 billion project, cities were built, GE and Dupont
worked to produce fissionable materials for the project. Government granted billions to
corporations to develop. Government essentially refinanced the rebuilding of most major
corporations during this time. Fostering greater business consolidation, creation of personal and
professional ties between government, businessmen, military, and universities.
