Catastrophism - things that happen in a matter of seconds to weeks. Some early geologists believed that the surface of the earth was shaped completely by catastrophic events. James hutton - the present is the key to the past. Things that are happening at a certain rate right now were likely happening at that same rate in the past (1700s) Usshers ideas on the age of earth - used bible to get an idea of when things started - did not work at all. Absolute dating - geologists can say this rock is a certain amount of years old + or - Study of universe, structure and how its changed. Different boundaries as you go into the earth based on the minerals (composition) and the strength of the minerals (rigidity) Earth is layered because of density of material. Mantle is made of peridotite - not liquid/fluid, its plastic and hot mineral that can flow through time.
