Many thought that was the ending of painting. No one could paint in a figurative way then, but some did. He studies the bodies and faces of his models for hours and hours for weeks and weeks and maybe even months. Enormous, self-portraits, adds lines like plastic surgery, paints herself in more of a fleshy manner, fleshy in the manner of rubens. Georg baselitz in the 1960s series of the heroes (helden) Abex is american, realism and figurative painting are to tell stories to support the regime. Baselitz is trained in figurative painting, but he sees jackson pollock at documenta and sees the possibilities for abstraction. He goes to western germany with the skills of figurative painting, but in an abex friendly place. He paints the canvas upside down to combine abex and figurative painting. He paints it upside down and also exhibits it upside down.
