- What is phonology?
o The study of the smallest contrastive units of language, and how those units are
organized, and how they are represented

o Phonology as a linguistic field: the study of the smallest contrastive units of
language, how they are organized and represented
o Phonology: how units are represented in the brain; abstract representation
o Phonetics: how a sign is produced in real time

o In order for a unit to be contrastive, replacing that unit with a different unit must
change its meaning
