Document Summary

A device that holds, supports or is placed on a part to be machined. Holds and locates workpiece and guides the cutting tool while cutting is performed. It provides a reference to the cutting operation but does not guide cutting tool. A part can slide freely in the x, y and z directions. It can also rotate cw and ccw around the x, y, and z axes, as shown in the gure. Fixtures should restrain the motion in all of these 12 directions. Note that the clamping limits motion moving up or away from the positioning points. Also note that the clamping is directly above the support points. This is the way xtures should be built. To ensure proper accuracy of the nished part the tolerance of the jig/ xture should be between 20 to 50% of part tolerance. More than 50% makes the jig/ xture not accurate enough.
