MFE 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 38: Quality Costs, Failure Analysis, Quality Management
Document Summary
Part 1 - introduction: chapter 10 is about measurement, inspection, & testing. Quality costs over the life of the product. Quality costs are sometimes referred to as the cost of quality. This seems a bit confusing because they are really the cost of not having quality. The critical point in this progression is that the costs get larger as your move down the list. For example, if you nd a potential design aw during the design phase and x it with a change to a dimension, the cost at that time is the cost of a few minutes of engineering design time. However, if you do not detect the aw until you have produced thousands and they are in the hands of customers, then the cost of correcting the situation can be very costly. A company that does not devote enough resources to the design phase will pay for it with scrap, rework, and costly failures in the eld.
