Appointment of federal judge is a two step process nomination by president and then confirmation by senate. Federal court judges appointed for life; removal from bench by resignation, death, or impeachment by senate. Any california state court judge can be removed by commission on judicial performance for misconduct. Jurisdiction is the power of a court to decide a certain type of case or to decide a case against a certain party. The merits of the case are not relevant to whether a court has jurisdiction. If a court acts without jurisdiction, any such action is void and can be set aside by subsequent motion in trial court or reversed by appellate court. Subject matter jurisdiction is the power of a court to decide a particular type of case.
