Document Summary

European legal history cali modules summary: roman law in antiquity: According to legend rome was founded by romulus and remus in 753 bc. During this period the city was ruled by kings until rome became a republic at the end of the 6th century. This law ended vagaries and prevented priests from changing the law. The twelve tables outlined procedural aspects of the law and governed private law, public law and sacral law. Although these plaques are now lost, a great deal of the text has survived in citations in later writings. The pater familias could chose to pay for damages from the family assets or could opt for noxae deditio, surrender of the person who cause the damages to the victim. Roman society place a high value on tradition which made them skeptical of changed being made to long standing law such as that of the twelve tables and they generally preferred to leave the law unaltered.
