Personality develops as a result of our effort to resolve conflicts between our biological impulses (id) and social restraints (superego) Id: unconscious sexual and aggressive drives, wants pleasure and immediate gratification. Ego: mediates the demands of the id and superego. Superego: standards for judgement (the conscience) and future aspirations. Freud believed personality formed during first few years. Divided into psychosexual stages where the id"s pleasure-seeking focuses on erogenous zones. Boy"s sexual desire for mom, jealous/hate for his dad. Girl"s sexual desire for dad, rivalry with her mom (electra complex) Children cope with these feelings by repressing them and identifying with the rival parent. Their superego gains strength that incorporates their parents" values. Repression: preventing bad thoughts and memories from entering consciousness. Sublimation: redirecting unmet desires or unacceptable impulses into acceptable activities. Denial: protecting yourself from an unpleasant reality by refusing to perceive it. Rationalization: substituting socially acceptable reasons for unacceptable ones.
