Literature after 1945 (2): postmodernism : philosophical/theoretical context: from structuralism to post-structuralism, postmodernism and the novel, drama after 1968: radicalisation, recent developments in poetry. Arbitrariness of the sign (de saussure): relationship of signifier and signified is arbitrary. If the relationship would not be arbitrary it would be a pictogram or icon like wau wau . A proof for that thesis is the fact that there are different language. Linguistic sign: connection between a concept in the real (signified or signif ) world and the word (signifier or signifiant) for it. In a web of signifiers, the world becomes meaningful only in this structure of words by its relationship to other words. A good example for another sign system with an arbitrary connection is the way people dress. First half of 20th century: powerful tool in analysing relationships and meanings. You might say that the process that gives words meaning never ends.
