Cognitive science is the scientific study of how people and animals process information. Cognitive psychology is the study of knowledge representation and use in human beings. Understanding the mind: philosophers such as plato and aristotle tried to explain the nature of human knowledge. 19th century: experimental psychology developed, until then philosophy. Wilhelm wundt: laboratory methods for studying mental operations. Watson: psychology should restrict itself to examining the relation between observable stimuli and observable behavioral responses. Noam chomsky rejected behaviorist assumptions about language as a learned habit instead language acquisition device (lad) Compare memory to a wax tablet which if not smoothed out, can later be read. Memory like an aviary of birds flying around (analogous to memories), often we grab a nearby bird but miss the target one = recall memory in a wrong way. Use method of loci (and other mnemonics) to recall facts and information. All knowledge comes from experiences and associations link ideas and memories.
