British literature includes everything from the middle ages to the 20th century. It started with the anglo-saxons in 449 and after it denoted the indigenous celtic population. British" we know now didn"t exist before the unification of scotland, england/wales in. 1707 including ireland which was part of the uk from 1801 to 1921. Which leads to the biggest problem, the composition of a canon (literature by different people in a specific time which are seen as relevant and important". Cultural identities: british/english are shakespeare, germans = goethe etc. Material: everything we can directly observe/experience (texts, paintings, etc. ) and cultural formations. Mental and social dimensions: things we cannot directly see or listen to (mentalities, systems of values, social structures etc. ), can only be observed indirectly through their manifestations in material culture. Rainbow portrait of queen elizabeth are full of symbols of her virginity. Picture (material) gives out that virgin is female perfection (mental, social).
