Modelling software which allows to change conditions to find optimum - bottlenecks can be identified and thus optimization of the process made easily and economically. Best process => short, few steps, easier to clean, cheaper, efficient but purity is compromised. More steps = lower yield (less product at the end) = higher purity. Each unit in the process is solved module-by-module in a stepwise manner. Originally for steady state problems of continuous processes. Can also be used for batch unit operations when you are only concerned with what you initially feed it and what you finally get out. Advantages: facilitates the rapid construction of flowsheets, enables model equations within unit modules to be altered without affecting the flowsheet structure. It enables comparisons to be made between a number of different scenarios, which will enable faster conclusions to be made, and the optimization of processes. Prohibits the wasting of valuable investment and time.
